ELS Spotlight with Marliz Murguia

Marliz Murguia is a Loan Officer for Southern Bancorp Bank in Glenwood, Arkansas.

What is the greatest advice you have ever been given?

The greatest advice I’ve ever been given came from my dad when he told me that “leaders establish standards and they do so by example.” He went on to talk about how besides organizing and managing, leaders also have a responsibility to create a standard for the people we are leading as well as our peers. These standards create an image of the type of work ethic people can expect from us and that ultimately, we will expect from others. This is something that must be exemplified through our actions not only our words. Fortunately in my life I have had no shortage of examples of standard-establishing leadership, especially here at Southern.

What does effective leadership look like to you?

Effective leadership looks like someone who is hard working, responsible, leads with integrity, and who takes initiative. Effective leadership at the end of the day is leadership that gets the job done, sometimes this even entails making the decision that no job is too small. Effective leaders tend to care more for the job getting done, than making sure the job they are doing is “leader-type” work.

The ELS Spotlight is an ongoing series to highlight our Emerging Leaders from around Arkansas.
