ELS Spotlight With Melissa Sutton

What does effective leadership look like to you?
An effective leader has to be a great listener as well as a great communicator. People want to feel like they are heard and valued when they are at work. A smile and an open ear can make all the difference in someone’s attitude.

What is the greatest advice you have ever been given?
The greatest advice I have been given that still sticks with me is from my Dad. He always told me the “squeakiest wheel gets greased first”. He taught me that it’s fine to be persistent as long as it didn’t come off rude or insensitive. If you want something, always try your hardest. Be the person others can rely on.

What is the most effective daily habit you possess?
I am an organization freak. Every day I have to go through and organize my emails. No email gets deleted or moved to a subfolder until it’s been completed. I also have a to-do list that I make every day in regards to what tasks needs to be completed.

The ELS Spotlight is an ongoing series to highlight our Emerging Leaders from around Arkansas.
